Frequently Asked Questions

Voice over Internet Protocol is a telecommunication system that allows voice to be sent over the Internet using a broadband Internet connection. The communication uses a protocol called SIP.

A Hosted PBX is a feature-rich VOIP business phone system where the PBX Hardware resides on a server in our Data Center. This is in comparison to the traditional expensive on premise business telephone systems. Cirrus is able to maintain the server from our location so all updates are easily deployed to all users.

A softphone is a piece of software that is installed on a computer or mobile device that can act as a VOIP endpoint or handset utilizing the speaker and microphone on the PC or Mobile device. Softphones are most often used in business continuity plans for their ability to be mobile and flexible with business phones.

SIP is a signaling communications protocol used to translate voice. The service provides routing of telephone calls from a client’s private branch exchange (PBX) telephone system to the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

Software that compresses and decompresses voice to enable faster transmission across the Internet.

Depending on the number of concurrent calls, the recommended Internet speed to run VOIP phones can be 3-10 Mbps. Not to worry, we will ensure that your business has the Internet needed to run our powerful phone systems.

VOIP reliability depends on the data network and Internet speeds that deliver the service to the business. The quality of your VOIP phones systems depends on the quality of service from your Internet service provider.

Absolutely, see ”Porting” below.

You can make emergency calls over a VOIP phone system, but the tracking of the location of VoIP phones is more difficult than a traditional landline phone system.

No problem , that is one of the best features of a VOIP Hosted PBX . Moving is seamless. You could move from Mobile, Alabama to Hong Kong, China and have service the same day.

Voice is converted by a device from an analog signal to a digital signal. It is then compressed and sent over the Internet where it will be decompressed, converted back to an analog signal for the remaining distance over a traditional circuit switch (PSTN). Unless the call is from VOIP handset to VOIP handset, in this case the call remains digital throughout the call.

This is the process of moving a telephone number from one carrier to another.

The Cirrus provisioning team will work directly with you , it all depends on the setup of the previous carrier. It is sometimes difficult or impossible to port DID blocks from a PRI. But in most cases you can port all of your numbers.

1. A copy of your most recent bill from your previous carrier 2. No pending orders on the telephone line with the current carrier 3. You cannot be in the arrears with your current telephone companies billing. 4. You must have clear ownership of the Telephone number

Yes, porting has nothing to do with ownership but more so to do with service providers.

The most common reason for a number port to fail is mismatched carrier information with what you have on the Cirrus port request form. Be sure to carefully review your Port form and the information you have on file with your previous carrier.

Absolutely, it is not ethical for companies to hold you hostage.

The process usually takes between 1 and 10 business days depending on the previous carrier and the type of service you are moving from.
